In mid-1998 the Ontario Provincial Government introduced Bill 35 - The Energy Competition Act, which completely re-structured the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Ontario. As a result in October 2000 Barrie Hydro Distribution Inc. (“Barrie Hydro”) was incorporated under the Ontario Business Corporations Act. At the time of incorporation, Barrie Hydro also acquired the electric utilities of the Towns of Penetanguishene, Bradford West Gwillimbury, and New Tecumseth, and the Township of Essa (Thornton). As of January 1, 2004 Barrie Hydro is the 12th largest electrical distribution utility or Local Distribution Company (“LDC”) in the Province and we serve over 66,000 customers in our seven (7) service areas.
Our fundamental purpose is the distribution and delivery of reliable, high-quality electricity and customer services, which result in a return on investment that meets the expectations of our shareholders. We also have an agreement to provide meter reading and billing services for the water consumers in the City of Barrie and the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. We intend to grow with the communities that we serve and play a prominent role in the development of their residential, commercial and industrial base, by providing and maintaining a reliable and efficient electrical distribution system.
